Course Coding for Online Spring Schedule Classes

It is already time to begin making decisions about the Spring Quarter schedule and classes.  It is also time to decide if you will be using the Canvas Learning Management System to enhance those courses.  Please contact whoever takes care of your division scheduling or contact Kristy Crosby directly and have your courses coded properly. The earlier this is done in the process the better. The sooner you have your classes available for the next quarter the sooner you can begin preparing them to ensure a smooth start for your future students.

Fully Online courses require a coding of 3.  (All coursework accomplished online except required proctored exams)*

Hybrid courses require a coding of 8.  (Some seat time is replaced by coursework done online)*

Web Enhanced requires a coding of 9.  (No seat time is replaced but extra materials are housed and available online)

*All new Online and Hybrid course need to go through an approval process.  Contact eLearning for more information.

I understand that some of you do not know the exact item numbers of your courses as of yet. You do however know that you will be using Canvas for them. Just let Kristy know that any class you are teaching will be using Canvas and should be coded as ENHANCED if it is not already coded as ONLINE or an HYBRID.

Why is Proper Coding Important?

This coding is important for:
·        Keeping statistics for Canvas use accurate in our Washington State system, and making sure we are able to keep this valuable resource available to students.
·        For making sure the words “Online”, “Hybrid”, or “Web Enhanced” appears in your course description in the schedule so students are aware of the potential for computer use with their classes. This should not be a surprise to them when they register.
·        To make sure that the automated process of online course creation with student and faculty enrollments occurs as expected and when expected.
·        Providing accurate statistics of resource use here at Clover Park so that resources are adequately managed to support online learning.

Thanks to everyone who makes sure this is already done properly and thanks to everyone who will make sure it is done in the future.

If you are not currently using Canvas to enhance your courses, we will be offering our required “Building Quality Courses in Canvas” early in winter quarter.  Information will come out soon.

Thanks as always!

Kelley and I have just returned from Instructure Con 2013 held once again in Park City, Utah.  Our brains are on overload from the many informative sessions we attended in the three days of the convention.  It was nice to have had Elaine Holster, Maureen Sparks, and Linda Avery attend as well.
